• All Parties to Be Consulted on CoD: FM Qureshi


    MULTAN: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday termed the talks between President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif ‘fruitful’, saying other political parties and coalition partners would also be taken into confidence on all national issues, including the repeal of controversial clauses from the constitution.He said the government wished to complete the restoration of constitution to its original position.
    To a question, he said that government wishes to complete this task as early as possible while completely understanding the point of view of different political parties and a parliamentary committee formed for the purpose will hold its next meeting on 20th July.
    He, however, added that it will be inappropriate to give a deadline because the parliamentary committee is already working on it.
    FM said that provincial autonomy is another important issue that is on the agenda of discussion of the parliamentary committee.
    He said that PML-N leader Mehtab Abbasi, who is the member of the parliamentary committee, was satisfied on the modalities and mechanism for repeal of controversial constitutional amendments.
    FM said that top leaders of both parties reiterated their commitment to implementation of Charter of Democracy (CoD) with the same spirit with which it was signed by martyred PPP chairperson Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif.
    He said that important national issues including economic troubles, operation in troubled tribal areas, rehabilitation of internally displaced persons and situation in Balochistan were discussed at length during the five-hour long marathon meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif.
    Two big political parties reiterated their pledge to strengthen democracy, democratic institutions and democratic traditions.
    FM said that there exist national cohesion and unanimity of view against terrorism and added that the two parties also recognized the international support to Pakistan in meeting its economic and security challenges.
    He said that operation in Swat was successful and IDPs have started returning to their homes and all out efforts were being made for their rehabilitation.
